Shape & Build: Pottery Template Handbuilding

Discover how a flat piece of clay can be transformed into a beautiful three-dimensional ceramic form. Using MUD’s specially designed pottery templates, participants will learn how to cut, assemble and refine their chosen piece through the slab-building technique.

The workshop introduces essential hand-building skills such as scoring, slipping, joining and surface finishing. Participants can also personalize their work with textures, patterns or decorative details. The available forms will depend on the studio’s current template selection.

Workshop Procedure:

1. Choose one pottery design from the available templates.

2. Receive a demonstration of the slab-building process.

3. Roll the clay to the correct thickness.

4. Trace the template and carefully cut each section.

5. Score and apply slip to the joining areas.

6. Assemble the sections to create the final form.

7. Strengthen and smooth the seams.

8. Refine the edges and surface.

9. Add textures, patterns or personal details.

10. Leave the piece with the MUD team for drying and kiln firing.

11. The participant will be contacted once the piece is ready for collection.

If you’d like to personalize your creations further, you can book an optional glazing session for 200 QAR.

Please note: After the date of the class, Final Pieces will be ready in 5 weeks maximum and can be collected within 5 weeks from date of notification. Once the time exceeds the pieces that are not taken will be owned by MUD.
